About Thrift Gull

Independent since 2026 ·

Thrift Gull started with a simple observation: most money advice fails because it's either joyless or vague. "Stop buying coffee" is joyless. "Spend mindfully" is vague. What actually works — what has always worked — is systems: repeatable processes that find leaks, cut waste and make the good decision the default decision. That's all we publish here. Systems we have tested, with the numbers we measured, written by people who have done this work professionally.

What we cover

Two beats, one mission. Our frugal living guides cover the household systems: food spending, subscriptions, energy, secondhand buying and selling, travel. Our digital money tools coverage reviews the apps and platforms that promise to help — tested with our own accounts, our own purchases and our own patience. When a tool earns a place in a careful household's toolkit, we say so. When it doesn't, we say that instead.

How we test

Every system published on Thrift Gull ran in at least one real household — usually three — for at least three weeks before publication. Every app review follows a minimum four-week hands-on period with the reviewer's own accounts. We do not accept sponsored placements, we do not run display advertising, and if a guide contains an error, we fix it and note the correction.

The editors

Wren Calloway

Wren spent eight years as a pricing analyst for a regional grocery chain before founding Thrift Gull. She covers food spending, retail psychology and the audit systems that keep household budgets honest.

Tomás Herrera

Staff Writer, Digital Money

Tomás covers digital banks and money apps. He spent six years in member services at a credit union and tests every app he writes about with his own accounts for at least four weeks.

Priya Anand-Bell

Contributing Editor

Priya covers the secondhand economy, travel and low-waste living. She furnished two flats entirely secondhand and has sold over a thousand items on resale platforms.
